  • END-OF-LIFE VISIONS AND MESSAGES

The pre-death visions, conversations and transformative experiences of the dying have been passed down from generation to generation for eons. Scientific investigation into these experiences, however, commenced less than a century ago. In 1926, the first recorded case of a transformative end-of-life experience, illustrative of visions and non-ordinary insights, was published in Dublin, Ireland, by Sir William Barrett. It was the case of ‘Doris’.

Doris had just given birth to a healthy young baby boy. Although the baby was well, the young mother lay dying. Suddenly she became radiant, smiling broadly, and said, “Oh lovely, lovely”. The attending physician was the wife of Sir William Barrett, Elizabeth Barrett, and she asked Doris what was so lovely. The patient, Doris, replied …

“Lovely brightness, wonderful beings”

The young mother was completely enveloped by the vision, as well as by the realness of it all. Then, with joyful enthusiasm, she cried,

“Why, it’s Father! Oh he’s so glad I am coming. It would be perfect if W. (the patient’s husband) would come too”

The medical staff brought Doris her newborn son. Whilst looking at the baby she asked aloud, “Do you think I ought to stay for the baby’s sake?” Then, focusing on the vision once more, she exclaimed, “I can’t – I can’t stay; if you could see what I do, you would know I can’t stay”. She turned to her husband saying, “You won’t let baby go to anyone who won’t love him, will you?” With this, Doris pushed her husband to one side, seemingly because he was blocking her view of the vision, and said, “Let me see the lovely brightness”. Then, while apparently looking at her deceased father standing very close by, she whispered, “I am coming”.

Suddenly, however, Doris appeared confused and exclaimed, “He has Vida with him, he has Vida with him!” Vida was Doris’s sister. She had passed three weeks earlier. Vida’s passing had been kept hidden from Doris because of her fragility and ill-health. As Doris did not know of her death, she felt confused by Vida’s presence in the vision of her deceased father and a life beyond.

This case proved to be the catalyst for the first scientific investigation into pre-death visions and conversations which was conducted by the Physics professor at the Royal College of Science in Dublin, Sir William Barrett. More recent research includes that of internationally renowned neuropsychiatrist Dr Peter Fenwick, Elizabeth Fenwick and professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Iceland, the late Erlendur Haraldsson.

In her talks and webinars on this topic, Elaine shares the information gathered by TELERF with the aim of ensuring that experiences of this nature become increasingly acknowledged realities of the end-of-life process. She considers this to be important, as these integral and valuable experiences can bring great peace and comfort to those who have them. These experiences are exceptional in nature and should not be dismissed, misinterpreted or feared. Elaine focuses on the underlying commonalities of these experiences, the significance and impact of these visions and insights on the dying, and stresses how important it is that we are aware of these events. In her work, Elaine draws together the threads of near-death experiences and outstanding end-of-life experiences in a fascinating presentation of information which is both compelling and reassuring. Elaine presents this information in a brilliant and succinct manner. The workshops are riveting and leave one with a feeling of hope and an understanding that death is not final but rather transformational (Joy)
